The Product
The OID DeviceThe product is a sterile kit that includes the delivery system as well as additional accessories needed for the treatment. A kit is intended for single use only (for one patient and one infected point only). Training courses for teaching the treatment method will be available.
The device is applied under local anesthesia at the target site, as a minimal invasive procedure, including an injection at the infected bone.
Background
In spite of very advanced diagnostic and treatment options, bone infections, called Osteomyelitis (OM), remain one of the most serious complications mainly in orthopedic surgery, but associated also with violent trauma, diabetic peripheral neuropathy, and other infectious sources. When osteomyelitis becomes chronic (COM), its high impact is suffered equally in terms of increased morbidity, comprehensive use of health care resources and sequelae. In the opinion of well recognized clinicians the term “cure” cannot be applied to COM, because the bone infection may occur years after apparently successful treatment of the disease. The main drawbacks of the currently used treatments, like thorough surgical debridement, locally applied antibiotics, hyperbaric oxygen treatment or electrically liberated silver ions, are their short term effect and restricted local influence.
